📬𝐓𝐡𝐫𝐨𝐰𝐛𝐚𝐜𝐤 𝐓𝐡𝐮𝐫𝐬𝐝𝐚𝐲: 𝐀 𝐏𝐢𝐞𝐜𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐕𝐚𝐥𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐞 𝐇𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐲 🎨 Today’s Throwback Thursday takes us to the former U.S. Post office in Valentine, NE., constructed in 1936-37 and located at 348 N Main St. While originally a post office, this building later became the home to the 𝐒𝐚𝐰𝐲𝐞𝐫 𝐌𝐞𝐦𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐋𝐢𝐛𝐫𝐚𝐫𝐲 in 1975, providing text books to Cherry County Schools. What makes this building truly special is its place on the 𝐍𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐑𝐞𝐠𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐨𝐟 𝐇𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐜 𝐏𝐥𝐚𝐜𝐞𝐬 (𝐍𝐑𝐇𝐏)—thanks to its remarkable mural, 𝑬𝒏𝒅 𝒐𝒇 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝑳𝒊𝒏𝒆 by Kady Faulkner. This artwork, completed in 1939, was part of President Franklin Roosevelt's 𝐍𝐞𝐰 𝐃𝐞𝐚𝐥 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐦, which aimed to provide relief for the unemployed and bring fine arts to communities nationwide. The mural, which depicts Sandhills scenes and incorporates local ranches’ cattle brands, stirred up quite the controversy when unveiled!
