📸✉️ Throwback Thursday Time! Check out this vintage postcard featuring a Chaufty photo of Frederick Peak in Valentine! 🏞️ The date of the card is unknown, and the cancellation stamp is a bit blurry (19??), adding to the mystery of this historic gem. 🕰️We did a little digging into postal history to uncover when this postcard might have been mailed. Here's what we found:The first two decades of the 1900s are considered to be the golden age of postcards. The craze for sending and collecting postcards began in Europe in the 1890s and soon infected the United States. On May 19, 1898, Congress passed the Private Mailing Card Act, allowing private publishers to print them, ending the Postal Service's monopoly.On December 24, 1901, the Postmaster General ordered that "Post Card" be printed on postcards in lieu of "Private Mailing Card". Until March 1, 1907, postal regulations prohibited written messages on the address side of postcards. The period before 1907 is sometimes called the "undivided back" era. The postcard rate was raised briefly from 1 cent to 2 cents in 1917-1919 to help fund the U.S. entry into World War 1. When the war ended in 1918, the rate was lowered to its prewar level of one cent. 🌳🎨What a fantastic Arbor Day celebration we had with our Pre-K Story Time kids!
