Interlibrary loan is a service provided by the Valentine Public Library to obtain materials not found in the library’s catalog. The Valentine Public Library has the ability to borrow items from other libraries nationwide on behalf of customers.


QUESTIONS?

1.  Who may use the interlibrary loan service?
Any customer with a valid Valentine Public Library card and who is a patron in good standing may request materials through interlibrary loan. The library staff has the ability to verify your account.

2.  What items can be borrowed through interlibrary loan?
Books not available in the Valentine Public Library although new releases probably will not be available for loan. Audio/visual materials (VHS, Music CDs, Audiocassettes, CD-ROM’s, DVDs, Audio Book CDs)

  • Photocopies of periodical articles not available in the Valentine Public Library System*
  • Census records and newspapers on microfilm

*Articles and other items may be photocopied, but must be in compliance with the US copyright regulations (Title 17 of the USC).
3.  What items may NOT be borrowed on interlibrary loan?

  • Books contained in special collections at the Valentine Public Library
  • Complete issues of a periodical or newspaper
  • E-Books
  • Materials needed in less than two weeks.

4.  How long will it take?
Generally a request is filled in two to six weeks. However, it may take longer depending on the demand for and/or the rarity of the item.

5.  How much does it cost?
The Valentine Public Library charges $5.00 for each book loan and $3.00 for each article to cover the costs of postage. Sometimes there are charges for microfilms depending on the lending institution.

6.  How will I know when my item arrives?
When your item arrives the staff at the library will notify you by phone.

7.  How long can I have the borrowed item?
The loaning institution determines the checkout period. Generally, loan periods are one to four weeks from the time the library receives the item. Some items are not available for checkout and may only be used in the library. This restriction usually applies to microfilm and rare books. These restrictions are placed by the loaning institution and are non-negotiable.
